Top delinquent taxpayers owe tens of billions, says Apeh

British Virgin Islands-registered steel maker DAM 2004 Kft tops the list of Hungarian companies with unpaid taxes, according to the latest figures of Apeh, Hungary's tax authority. DAM 2004, which was forced into liquidation in June 2009, has failed to pay HUF 6.7 billion in taxes and is liable to an additional HUF 5.9 billion in fines for non-payment. According to the list, another seven companies have unpaid taxes exceeding HUF 1 billion, which tax experts say are practically unrecoverable. Among the tax delinquents is bus maker Alfa Busz Kft, which made headlines last year after it won several scandal-ridden public contracts but went into liquidation in September.
