Minister of National Economy György Matolcsy will answer all questions of European Union Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn regarding government reforms within a couple of days, government spokesperson Anna Nagy told the business daily Vilaggazdaság.
Ms Nagy said she was not able to answer the question whether Mr Matolcsy's written response will contain the budget reforms otherwise expected for the end of this month, the paper said on Thursday. Mr Matolcsy's letter will confirm the government's commitment to adhere to the recommendations of Ecofin made in the excessive deficit procedure, Ms Nagy said.
Mr Rehn sent a letter to the Hungarian government urging it to announce lasting and concrete reform measures soon in order to secure the short- and medium-term balance of government finances, the newspaper reported, without naming its source.
Mr Rehn asked the government to announce the reforms as quickly as possible to demonstrate its further commitment to recommendations by Ecofin, the paper said.
The reform measures are necessary as the Commission has become aware of "fiscal developments" that may possibly "not be in line" with EU recommendations, Mr Rehn's press chief, Amadeu Altafaj Tardio, told the paper. (MTI)
