Hungarian farmers not optimistic

Despite government’s plans to raise state support of Hungarian fruit and vegetable farmers by 50% this year, most of the growers consider their future as dark and unpredictable, business daily Napi Gazdaság reported.

Even those who closed 2010 with a profit, mainly due to the high purchase prices in Western Hungary, do not dare to invest or expand because of the unpredictability of the state support system, the paper reported citing an agricultural expert.

Without technological developments, Hungarian farmers will not be able to keep up with the increasing demand for fruits and vegetables. The inflexibility of employment regulation is also a major problem in the sector, Napi Gazdaság added.
