Gov’t to freeze HUF 5 bln from public media budget

The government is planning to freeze HUF 5 billion of the public media’s annual HUF 63.1 billion budget, the daily Népszabadság reports.

Besides limiting spending, state-owned broadcasters will also undergo major revisions and staff cuts. The paper said the process will start in the spring and cited unnamed executives at the stations who envisioned the firing of some 1,000 employees altogether.

Népszabadság also mentions that the autumn launch of a new programming structure in Hungarian media will likely be off schedule by at least a quarter.
