Vencel Garamvári named Winegrower of the Year

The Hungarian Wine Academy has named Vencel Garamvári Winegrower of the Year 2006.

Garamvári has 70 hectares of vineyards in the South Balaton winegrowing region, but he told MTI he would like to add another 30-50 hectares. The Garamvári cellars break even on sales of wine in Hungary, but turn a profit on exports to the US, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland and Denmark, Garamvári said. It is difficult to be profitable on the Hungarian market because 65%-70% of wine sales are at supermarket chains owned by multinationals, he added. In spite of this, demand for the highest quality Hungarian wines is growing as oenophiles become more willing to pay more.
Just 2% of Hungary's annual 3.5 million hectoliter wine production is in the same category as the Garamvári cellars' wines, Hungarian Wine Academy secretary Zoltán Zilai said.
