Hungary's Agriculture Administration Office levied a combined HUF 169 million in fines on big foreign-owned supermarket chains for selling food products under cost in the first half of 2009, compared to HUF 183 million for the whole year 2008, business daily Napi Gazdaság reported.
Discount chain Lidl paid the biggest fine, of HUF 50 million, for selling bananas under cost. A HUF 47 million fine for Auchan, for selling Jagermeister-brand spirits under cost, was a close second. Auchan was also fined HUF 20 million for selling sugar too cheaply. (MTI – Econews)
