Sugar refinery seeks to become energy independent

Sugar refiner Magyar Cukor, a unit of Austria's Agrana, has installed a HUF 220 million secondary fermenter as a step toward supplying all of its energy needs with biogas, László Hajós, managing director of Biogas Developer, said at a press conference in Kaposvár (SW Hungary) on Thursday.

The investment was supported with HUF 130 million in European Union funding, Hajós said. The sugar refinery — the last one operating in Hungary — should supply all of its own energy by 2013, when sugar quotas are expected to be eliminated, he added.
