Brokers speculate that Sberbank, Russia’s biggest bank, is interested in buying the Ukrainian unit of Hungary’s OTP Bank, business daily Napi Gazdaság reported on Thursday.
Rumors circulated among brokers on Wednesday afternoon that Sberbank is not interested in OTP Bank -- as earlier reported, and denied by Sberbank -- but in OTP Bank’s Ukrainian arm CJSC OTP Bank, the paper wrote.
OTP Bank bought the unit from Raiffeisen for €700 million two years earlier. OTP Bank raised capital at the unit by €120 million in August, and it gave the bank a €1.8 billion credit line at the end of September. (MTI-Eco)
