Analysts surveyed by the daily Napi Gazdaság say that the majority of major retail chains on the market in Hungary are set to slow down their expansion efforts.
Earlier, most of them stated that their future plans depend on the economic conditions, but even as the environment improves, they are still likely to realize less ambitious previous plans that were formulated two or three years ago.
The phenomenon exists even though many have already acquired the required development plots and in some cases also the permits from the relevant authorities, so everything is ready for new projects in theory.
Developments realized this year are mostly focused on the food segment, most notably Austria’s Spar having commenced the integration of its Plus chain and since it plans an equal number of new openings next year as in 2010, it is set to remain the biggest player of the national market.
