The number of international conferences in Hungary climbed more than 50% to 537 in 2010 from the previous year, state tourism agency Magyar Turizmus told MTI on Tuesday.
The number of participants at the conferences rose 53% to about 125,000. About 81% of participants arrived from abroad and 19% came from Hungary, Magyar Turizmus said, citing data compiled by the Hungarian Congress Office.
Most of the international conferences were held in Budapest. The runner-up was Pécs, which was one of the 2010 European Capitals of Culture. Sopron and Szeged tied for third place.
The number of conferences organized in hotels dropped more than 10% in 2010 as the number hosted by universities and scientific institutes jumped.
The organizers of more than half of the conferences were Hungarian. Organizers from the UK accounted for the second-biggest number of conferences, followed by organizers from Germany and Austria.
The length of the international conferences averaged 3.7 days.
