Norwegian Air Shuttle orders 42 jets from Boeing

Oslo-based low-cost carrier Norwegian Air Shuttle announced on Thursday that it has ordered 42 Boeing 737-800 jets worth some $3.1 billion.

The carrier said it had an option with US maker Boeing for a further 42 jets that can seat 189 passengers each. Deliveries were slated between 2009 and 2014. CEO Bjorn Kjos said the new Boeing jets were more efficient, using less fuel and emitting less carbon dioxide.

Norwegian Air Shuttle operates 102 routes - 10 in Norway and 92 mainly to various European destinations - and currently has a fleet of 25 Boeing 737-500 jets that seat 148 people. Norwegian Air has some 620 employees and flew 5.1 million passengers last year. In May, the carrier ordered 11 Boeing 737-800 jets. (m&
