NHH starts talks with cable TV companies

The National Communications Authority (NHH) announced on Wednesday it has started consultation with cable television companies, some of which also offer internet and VOIP services, with the aim of boosting competition in the industry's and consumers' interest.

The NHH has completed an assessment of Hungary's cable television market and expects from Wednesday comments from cable TV companies on the industry's regulations, NHH Council member Krisztina Rozgonyi told a Budapest conference. The resulting NHH decision on the industry is expected to be taken at the end of summer.
Hungary's cable TV market is expanding rapidly: it accounted for Ft 60 billion of Hungary's Ft 771 billion communications market in 2004, NHH president Dániel Pataki said at the conference. The proportion of Hungarians with cable TV is high even by international standards, he added. There are 20 cable television subscriptions in Hungary per 100 people, compared to an average 16 in the EU, and 31% of Hungary's broadband internet subscribers get the service through cable TV, he said.
