A new structure at Frankfurt Airport is set to be unveiled and put into operation on October 10 – the A-Plus pier, designed to give positions at Terminal 1 for wide-body aircraft.
The additional capacity of 6 million passengers that the new A-Plus pier provides will be exclusively used by Lufthansa. According to its own estimates, the Frankfurt Airport will serve 88 million passangers a year by 2020 - a 3.5% growth from the current 56 million-plus passangers. Therefore, the development of the A-Plus pier contributes significantly to meet the demand for more wide-body aircraft docking positions and additional passanger waiting areas. In particular, the new pier provides the required infrastructure for comfortably handling next-generation aircrafts like the Airbus A380 Superjumbo and the Boeing 747-8. Out of the seven new passanger bridges, four can be used by the A380 Superjumbo or, alternatively, by two smaller aircraft at the same time.
The A-Plus pier includes five new Lufthansa Lounges (one First Class Lounge and two Senator and two Business Lounges), doubling the airport's lounge space to 7,500 sqm. The luggage capacity will top 5,000 items per hour, and the baggage claim area will grow altogether by 25,300 sqm. The total retail place will expand to 12,000 sqm, including 2,000 sqm for gastronomy. Nearly 60 shops, including food and beverage outlets, will be located on the three passanger levels of the new pier. For the first time, conceptualized "walk-through" duty-free shops will be established: after passing the security control, passengers will go through the shop area on their way to the gates.
To construct the new pier, 100,000 tons of cement, 17,000 tons of concrete steel, and 70,00 sqm of natural stone surfaces were used. The project cost about €700 million, of which €560 million went into above-ground constructions.
