More than 3,000 exemptions requested from public sector mandatory retirement rule

Hungary's government ministries want to keep more than 3,000 staff from leaving because of mandatory retirement rules, business daily Világgazdaság said on Tuesday. Cabinet members had until the end of January to enforce mandatory retirement for public sector workers who have reached pension age and have worked long enough to earn full pension. Exceptions could be requested on a case-by-case basis. Világgazdaság said the Human Resources Ministry has requested exceptions be made for more than 2,500 people, including 1,910 in the healthcare sector and 520 in education. About 6,500 healthcare workers and 3,700 teachers were affected by the new mandatory retirement rules.
