Metro wins EU approval to buy grocery outlets in Poland

Metro AG, Europe's third-largest retailer, secured European Union antitrust approval to buy 19 outlets of a Polish grocery chain. The European Commission, the 25-nation EU's antitrust regulator in Brussels, announced the approval in a statement yesterday. Metro is buying the Geant outlets from Casino Guichard-Perrachon SA, France's fifth-largest supermarket operator. Casino, based in Paris, on July 17 agreed to sell its Polish supermarket chains for € 884 million ($1.1 billion). As well as the Geant stores, the transaction also included the sale of 279 Leader Price stores to the UK's Tesco Plc. (Bloomberg)
