Hungary's MAL, the owner of the ruptured sludge reservoir, is to pay HUF 300 million a year or a combined HUF 1.5 billion in compensation over five years to victims of the sludge disaster that took place two weeks ago, MAL president Lajos Tolnay told Borsodonline.hu.
It is not yet possible to draw accurate conclusions regarding the issues of liability, however, human tragedies must be managed somehow, Tolnay said.
Tolnay confirmed that the company has made preparations to place the sludge in a reservoir that is four times safer than the one that ruptured two weeks ago.
Production was restarted on Friday at the MAL alumina plant in Ajka after it was shut down following the sludge-reservoir rupture. (MTI-Econews)
