Magyar Telekom spent an annual HUF 20 billion-30 billion on network developments when mobile subscriber numbers were climbing by several hundred thousand a year, but spending could reach HUF 10 billion-HUF 50 billion under the current program, chief technology and IT officer István Maradi told MTI in Barcelona on Wednesday.
The number of mobile phone subscriptions in Hungary rose sharply from 4,967,000 in 2001 to 12,012,000 at the end of 2010, data from the national telecommunications authority show.
MTI learnt that Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson and Nokia-Siemens are bidding in a tender to upgrade Magyar Telekom's network. The winner is to be selected at the end of March.
Magyar Telekom has initiated a procedure at the Competition Office (GVH) over claims by competitor Vodafone Magyarország that its mobile data transmission network is the fastest in Hungary, Magyar Telekom chief marketing officer István Király told MTI. (MTI-Econews)
