Livestock declines further in year to April 1, 2006

Hungary's cattle stocks declined 21,000 to 700,000 on April 1, 2006 from a year earlier, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Friday.
The stock fell 8,000 from the last report on December 1, 2005. The number of cows was 20,000 lower than on April 1, 2005, and fell 8,000 from December 1, 2005. The number of pigs decreased 69,000 in twelve months to 3.846 million, and the number of breeding sows fell 15,000 to 278,000 on April 1, 2006.
At the start of April there were 35.52 million chicken, hens and cocks in Hungary, 3.62 million more than at the start of December and 358,000 less than on April 1, 2005.
There were 1.394 million sheep on April 1, 2006, 126,000 less than a year earlier, KSH reported. The stock fell 11,000 from December 1, 2005. The number of horses fell 7,000 in four months to 66,000 on April 1, 2006, unchanged from a year earlier.
