Hungary stretch of Nabucco pipeline awarded environmental permits

All necessary environmental permits have been awarded for the construction of a 384km stretch of the planned Nabucco gas pipeline that is to pass through Hungary, the Nabucco Consortium said on Tuesday.

The stretch of the pipeline was the first in any country to be awarded all of the necessary environmental permits.

The Nabucco is to deliver gas from Central Asia to Europe, reducing the region's dependency on Russian energy. The pipeline is to run from the Turkish border through Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Austria.

Hungarian oil and gas company MOL, a member of the Nabucco Consortium, said earlier that the original plan for the pipeline was unviable, but conceded that a scaled-down version of the project could work.
