The government will call an auction for the 900 MHz band which could give winners access to the frequencies by the end of Q3 2011, the National Development Ministry told MTI on Tuesday, confirming a report in daily Népszabadság.
The ministry will soon start drafting legislation requiring the buyers of the frequency to use UMTS technology, which is compatible with GSM technology, the standard for the EU.
The government aims to boost competition on the mobile telecommunications market with the sale of the frequencies, the ministry said.
The Hungarian units of Deutsche Telekom, the UK's Vodafone and Norway's Telenor hold rights for frequencies in the 900 MHz band at present.
