Government supervision of MAL to end on July 1

The Hungarian Aluminum Production and Trading Company (MAL) will return to independent management from July 1 after a period of almost nine months under state supervision, György Kossa, the chairman of the government oversight committee monitoring the company's operations, told news agency MTI on Thursday.

A containment reservoir burst at MAL's plant in Ajka (C Hungary) last October 4, killing ten people and flooding two nearby villages with red sludge. The Parliament on October 11 adopted the lex MAL, which allowed the government to take over management of the company.

The state of emergency will be lifted in Veszprem County on July 1 as well.
