GM set to launch €500 mln Hungary expansion in March

US auto maker General Motors is set to start construction of a 30,000-sqm plant in Szentgotthárd, west Hungary, as part of a €500 million expansion program it announced last fall, daily Világgazdaság reports, citing Tamás Zsolt, managing director of GM Powertrain Kft. The investment will double GM's shop floor capacity in Hungary making the Szentgotthárd plant one of its largest in the world. The project is expected to create 800 jobs and increase GM's headcount to 1,400 in Hungary. GM won a HUF 7.5 billion government grant for the investment. The new plant will come on stream by November 2012. As of end 2009, GM invested €748 million in Hungary since it began production there in 1992. (BBJ)
