Swedish telecommunications equipment maker Ericsson on Friday said it has signed a $1.3 billion deal to expand and upgrade the GSM network of Indian telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL).
Deliveries were to begin in October, and the first phase was slated to be completed in 12 months, Ericsson said. “Upgrading our network will pave the way for a premium communications experience for our customers, and enable us to address new customer segments cost-efficiently,” BSNL Managing Director Kuldeep Goyal said in a statement. Ericsson India president Mats Granryd said the deal was “set to be a catalyst for future telecom growth in the dynamic Indian market.” India is one of the fastest-growing mobile phone markets in the world.
