Environment authority rejects appeal by conservationists on Audi land decision

Hungary's national environment authority has rejected an appeal by conservationists of a decision to reclassify a parcel of protected land on which German carmaker Audi plans to expand its base, the head of the authority's regional office told MTI on Friday.

The reclassification of the land cleared the way for a €900 million expansion at Audi's base in Gyor (NW Hungary). The investment will raise output at the plant to 125,000 cars a year from 2013 and create 1,800 jobs.

The European Commission approved the reclassification, saying it was in the best interest of the public, National Economy Minister György Matolcsy said earlier.
