EC investigating Hungarian voucher system

A European Union official on Sunday confirmed the European Commission is investigating a food voucher system Hungary introduced at the start of the year.

Spokeswoman for internal market and services Chantal Hughes told MTI that the Commission was investigating the new "Erzsébet" voucher system "in a comprehensive, global manner".

"The Commission is considering in particular whether certain provisions of...the legislation may amount to restrictions to the right of establishment or the right to provide services," she added.

Chantal said the investigation sought to establish whether conditions imposed under the system discriminate against foreign companies.

Daily Népszabadság said last Thursday that the Commission had asked Hungarian authorities to provide it with information on the new voucher system after receiving complaints from market players alleging it was discriminative because it practically excludes multinational supermarket chains from participation.
