Court orders source of sludge flood to pay MÁV HUF 100 mln in damages

The Budapest municipal court on Wednesday ordered alumina company MAL to pay state-owned railway company MÁV HUF 100 million in damages related to an industrial disaster last October.

The HUF 100 million payment was ordered as an injunction on the first day of hearings in the case. MÁV is seeking about HUF 353 million from MAL to compensate for damage to tracks and equipment caused by a flood of toxic red sludge from a burst reservoir at MAL's plant in northwest Hungary.

The flood killed ten people and damaged hundreds of homes, making it Hungary's worst ever industrial disaster.
