Construction of Budapest ring rail could start in 2017

Construction of a HUF 270 billion-600 billion ring rail line around the south of Budapest could start as soon as 2017, depending on government decisions, resources and the available area, Zsolt Fülöp, chairman of Hungarian logistics association MLSzKSz said in Wednesday's issue of business daily Napi Gazdaság.

The ring line - dubbed "V0" in Hungarian - would be completed by 2023 at the earliest, Fülöp said. A large part of the cost would be covered by European Union funding, he added.

The ring line would accommodate an expected increase in rail transit and a shift of 5-10% of freight volume from roads, he said.
