By the time the Metro 4 line starts operation, Budapest has to impose congestion charge on cars driven in the city center, nol.hu, the online version of Népszabadság reported. Launching the charge is laid down in the European Union’s conditions of financing Budapest Metro 4 project.
The metro construction has to be completed by 2015 at the latest, and so the congestion charge has to be imposed by that time. Budapest Mayor István Tarlós is, however, unlikely to wait that long with launching the extra fee, nol.hu said revoking some previous statements of Tarlós mentioning late 2013 or early 2014 as dates of imposing the charge. The fee is planned to generate an extra HUF 13 billion for Budapest.
