Hungary's competition office (GVH) levied a combined HUF 717 million in fines in 2008, down from HUF 2.2 billion in 2007 due to the falling number of cartel cases, GVH said.
GVH levied a combined HUF 698.7 million in fines in 59 cases for misleading advertising in 2008.
GVH did not levy any fines for cartel activity, though some investigations of suspected cartel activity started in 2008 have not yet been completed, nor did it levy any fines for abuse of market position. It did, however, reach agreements on actions to be taken by companies instead of fines in the latter cases.
GVH made decision on 46 mergers in 2008, finding a breach of regulations in just one case.
The courts upheld more than 90% of decisions by GVH in appeals in first- and second-instance rulings. Among the decisions the courts upheld was one fining a motorway construction cartel HUF 7.04 billion. (MTI – Econews)
