The expansion of a swimming pool for the European Swimming Championships, planned to be held on Budapest's Margitsziget this summer, was given the go-ahead by a municipal committee on Tuesday.
The City Council's committee in charge of protecting the cityscape had failed at a previous meeting to issue a license for erecting temporary grandstands because government-appointed and opposition members were at loggerheads over the issue. Opposition members had blocked permission on environmental grounds.
Today's decision will allow the expansion of public facilities covering over 11,000 square meters. Over the past year plans to extend the facility on the island have sparked protest from environmentalists because several healthy trees were cut down in the area.
