Brussels awards Gyulai, Csabai salami “protected designation of origin” status

The European Commission on Monday granted “protected designation of origin” status to salami made in the Hungarian cities of Gyula and Békéscsaba.

Csabai kolbász and Gyulai kolbász, both cured salamis flavored with paprika, were granted PDO status.

PDO status applies to some 900 agricultural products food which are produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area using recognized know-how. The EU's PDO scheme aims to “encourage diverse agricultural production, protect product names from misuse and imitation and help consumers by giving them information concerning the specific character of the products.” (MTI – Econews)
