Bombardier Transportation has received an order to supply 37 new generation double-deck coaches for the suburban rail network operated by Koleje Mazowieckie in the Mazovia region of Poland. The contract is valued at approximately €55 million ($75.5 million).
The funding for this new order is shared by the customer, the Mazovia Region and the EIB (European Investment Bank). Delivery of the coaches is scheduled to be completed in 2008. The order consists of 11 motor coaches and 26 middle coaches. The cost will be financed from the Mazovia region's budget and €35 million ($48 million) credit from EIB.
The trains will be used on the most occupied lines in Mazovia, like Warsaw-Radom. According to the analysis ordered by the region and undertaken by TOR Consultants and CNTK 11 push-pull sets can replace 20 EMUs which means saving €1.5 million a year. The Bombardier coaches also offer capacity of up to 400 passengers, twice as much as the old EMUs.
The self-government of Mazovia plans to buy used locomotives to operate the push-pull sets with Bombardier coaches.
Mazovia also plans to buy 20 new modern class EMUs for the Warsaw conurbation, willing to spend €100 million. In 2008 the 10 new FLIRT EMUs manufactured by the Swiss company Stadler will also arrive.
Bombardier Transportation Polska (formerly Pafawag) has played a major role in equipping the Polish railways with rolling stock ever since the foundation of the company in 1838. For example, since 1945, fully 70 % of all electrical locomotives and all Electric Multiple Units currently in operation have been delivered by the Wroclaw factory. (railway-market.pl)
