Bombardier makes layoffs at Hungary plant, more could follow

The Hungarian unit of Canada's Bombardier laid off 59 people at its bogie plant in Mátranovák in May and could make further staff cuts in the autumn because of falling orders due to the crisis, company representative István Szini confirmed for MTI.

The plant laid off 25 of its own staff and 34 contracted laborers in May, and it could lay off some 90 more people in September and October,  Szini said. Currently, 729 people work at the plant.

Bombardier Transportation bought the plant from Hungary's Ganz Acélszerkezeti in 2005. Last November, the company inaugurated a €2.2 million production hall outfitted with robotic welders.

A state grant covered half of the cost of the investment. (MTI – Econews)
