Bad weather is expected to reduce the crop in Hungary's famous Tokaj wine region by 30% to 250 million kilograms, István Kiss, who heads state-owned wine maker Tokaj Kereskedőház, told MTI.
Growers are being paid about HUF 80 per kilogram for muscat grapes, about 25% more than last year, Kiss said. Tokaj Kereskedőház will buy about 90 million kilogram of grapes this year, he added.
The grapes from which Tokaj wine is traditionally made will not be picked until October 10 at the earliest.
Tokaj Kereskedőház's revenue fell 10% to HUF 3.2 billion in 2009. Domestic sales dropped 15%, but exports were up 8%. Exports accounted for 40% of the company's sales. (MTI-ECONEWS)
