Amount of unpaid taxes grows; more owed by companies no longer operating

The amount of unpaid taxes at the end of last year was larger than in previous years and more was owed by companies that are no longer operating, State Audit Office chairman László Domokos said at a tax conference in Sopron (W Hungary) on Thursday.

Unpaid taxes came to HUF 1,989.3bn at the end of 2010, up 15.5% from twelve months earlier and 41% more than at the end of 2008, Domokos said. The proportion of unpaid taxes owed by companies that have stopped operating rose to 75.4% in 2010 from 70% in 2009 and 64.8% in 2008, he added.

The percentage of the total of unpaid taxes more than a year old rose to 41.2%.

Domokos noted that Hungary's tax office managed to collect 8% more in back taxes than the HUF 280bn target last year.
