Airbus announce 'plans to lay off 8,000', say union sources

French-based aircraft manufacturer Airbus will lay off around 8,000 employees as part of its Power8 restructuring plan, trade union sources said

In the company's headquarters in Toulouse, around 2,300 people on the assembly line and a further 946 corporate employees would be let go, the sources aid. Other Airbus manufacturing locations to be affected would be in the German city of Hamburg (2,317), the western English town of Filton (1,095) and other locations in France, the sources added. The Power8 plan was approved by the board of directors of Airbus parent company EADS partly in reaction to increased competition and financial burdens related to the company's delays in delivering the A380 aircraft, which have cost the company billions of dollars.
