Wind turbine starts turning

A wind turbine capable of generating 800kW of electricity, more than any other wind turbine in Hungary, was put into operation in the village of Erk, northeastern Hungary yesterday. Vilmos Kiss, the businessman who built the wind turbine, said it would supply enough power for 800 households, generating 1.7 million kWh a year. The electricity generated by the wind turbine will be sold to regional power distributor Émász Rt. The 74.5 meter tall tower has a 48m-wide turbine. It cost Ft 250 million to build. Kiss noted that power distributors are required to buy the electricity produced by the wind turbine, even though it costs 50% more to make than that produced by burning fuels. Much of the difference is made up for with a state subsidy, he added.
