Viasat 3 protests lack of tender

Although the National Radio and Television Board (ORTT) extended the operational contracts of commercial TV channels TV2 and RTL Klub by five years last week without a tender, Hungary's number 3 commercial channel, Viasat 3, would have submitted a bid to one of the national frequencies, according to Viasat 3 CEO Attila Kocsis. However, the Media Act makes it possible to extend operational contracts without a tender. Viasat 3 is owned by the Swedish Modern Times Group (MTG). In related news, János Tímár, a member of ORTT and a delegate for the Alliance of Free Democrats (SzDSz), proposed a price hike on the annual Ft 1.5 billion fee the commercial channels have to pay to ORTT for the concession rights, but the rest of delegates voted against it.
