The Minister of Defence and the US Ambassador in Hungary signed a co-operation agreement on Tuesday on the elimination of short-range anti-aircraft missiles. A total of 1,540 Strela-2 missiles and accessories will be destroyed at a cost of Ft 350 million (EUR 1.4 million), said Defence Minister Ferenc Juhász. The US will cover around one-fifth, or $350,000 (EUR 280,000) of the costs. Since 1970, 25 aircrafts have been shot down around the world by these kinds of anti-aircraft missiles, said US Ambassador George H. Walker. It is important to make sure that no obsolete military equipment is stored in Hungary to ensure they do not fall into the wrong hands, said Juhász.
