Transport industry H1 freight volume up 10.2% year-on-year

Hungary's freight transport companies carried 10.2% more goods in the first half of 2005 than in the same period in 2004, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Wednesday. In the first half of 2005 the freight volume carried totaled 132.7 million tons, up 10.2% in a year, and freight kilometers totaled 18.91 billion, up 18.1% year-on-year. Freight transport on public roads rose by 15% but freight transport by railways dropped by 8.6%, KSH's report said. Passenger transport increased by 3.7% in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2004. Of total passenger transport, 21% was by air, 45% by public road and 34% by railway. Budapest's Ferihegy airport registered 60,800 arrivals in H1 of 2005, marking a 23% increase compared to the same period of last year and the number of passengers handled by the airport was 3.6 million, representing a 32% increase. The number of cars registered in Hungary was 2.86 million on June 30 this year and their average age was 10.7 years, KSH reported.
