Roma protest in Budapest

Members of the Civil Roma Association (RPT) staged a demonstration in front of the Prime Minister's Office on Friday, protesting against poverty and for programs targeting the minority's integration into mainstream society. Some 100,000 Roma people live in Hungary in "miserable circumstances evoking the 15th century," RPT President István Makai said, addressing about 80 demonstrators. Civil rights activist Miklos Palfi said that the whole of the Hungarian political elite, both left and right, was responsible for worsening conditions for the Roma minority. (MTI)
