Nine-month petrol sales fall, diesel sales rise

Some 2.058 billion liters of vehicle fuel was sold in Hungary in the first nine months of 2005, 0.3% less than in the same period a year earlier, figures posted on the website of the Hungarian Petroleum Association show. About 1.164 billion liters of petrol was sold in January-September, 4.6% less than in the same period a year earlier. But the amount of diesel fuel sold during the period rose 5.7% to 921 million liters. György Wilde, who heads the association, said he expects this trend to prevail for the rest of the year, adding that sales of diesel fuel, which is primarily used for haulage vehicles, increases as the economy expands.
Hungary's vehicle fuel market is already saturated, and offers the least prospects for expansion in the Central and Eastern European region, according to a study by research company Datamonitor cited in business daily Világgazdaság.
