Hungary?s leading newswire Magyar Távirati Iroda Rt (MTI) is planning to sue several media companies in H2 for unauthorized use of its news, MTI told business daily Világgazdaság. Numerous websites, radio stations and national newspapers publish MTI?s news without paying for the information, causing several hundred million forints of revenue loss to the wire service. Rather than by downloading stories from the MTI website, unauthorized use typically takes the form of secondary publication, President Mátyás Vince said. Starting this year, the company is making an increased effort to expose illegal activities of this kind in newspapers as well as in the electronic media. In the meantime, several media companies whose news are frequently used by competiors without permission have contacted the National Federation of Hungarian Journalists (MÚOSz) seeking help to curb the fast growing ?news piracy? business.
