Construction of the north-south Metro 5, which would function as a subway line in downtown areas and as a light railway in the suburbs, could start in late 2007, chairman of Budapest?s city operation committee Imre Lakos (SzDSz) said yesterday after a committee session. Plans are for the new line to connect Dist. 3 in Buda with the southern districts of Pest with a tunnel across the Danube under Margaret island. The first phase of the project would cost Ft 130 billion of the total 600 billion planned for the investment. The public could start using Metro 5 at the end of 2009, Lakos said. It is urgent to make decisions because the development should be harmonized with the Metro 4 project, he added.
