Malév?s online booking system takes off

Hungarian national airline Malév Rt saw over Ft 72 million in ticket
sales in the third week of January, which is twice as much as the
highest weekly result so far, the company reported, adding that January
sales rose tenfold yr/yr. The company attributes the record figures to
a recent upgrade of its travel portal, which helped boost revenues
beyond way beyond expectations.
Malév's 2004 online ticket sales totaled Ft 1.17 billion, much higher
than the projected figure. Domestic sales over the Internet accounted
for 14% of total sales in Hungary through the company's own sales
channels, or 6.9% of all Malév sales not including tickets sold by
agents. The company's plans for 2005 include e-business development,
electronic ticketing, and kicking off online sales through 7 or 8 other
European branches, including those in Warsaw, Prague, Bucharest,
Timisoara, Madrid, Ljubljana and Istanbul. Malév introduced its new
online reservations system, based on Amadeus software and developed
in-house, which currently allows customers to reserve tickets through
26 cities in 15 countries. The most popular destinations in online
ticket sales last year included London, New York, Paris, Brussels,
Zurich and Dublin.
