Local residents win IKEA court case

An appeals court has upheld the claims of eight families that sued Swedish furniture and accessories retailer IKEA Furnishings Kft for disrupting their nights' rest by round-the-clock construction work for several months in 2002, awarding each household Ft 150,000 compensation plus interest. The lawsuit is one of three, initiated by attorney Tamás Biczy on behalf of 28 families claiming they suffered from the incessant noise when Budapest's IKEA store in Dist. 14 was enlarged. As the wording of the complaints was identical, it can be reasonably expected that similar verdicts will follow in the other two cases, Biczy said.
