Ivan Szabo, former Finance Minister, dies at 71

Ivan Szabo, Hungary's former Minister of Industry and Finance under the Antall
government, has died at the age of 71. Mr Szabo was also a head of the Hungarian Democratic Forum
(MDF), and the Hungarian Democratic People's Party. Mr Szabo graduated with a degree in engineering in 1957. Later, he earned degrees in economics. A founding member of the MDF, Mr Szabo was an MP from 1990 to 1998, and took the post of Ministry of Industry and Finance in December 1991. He became Finance Minister in February 1993. Mr Szabo played a major role in Hungary's changing economic policy after the change of regime.
