Hungary jobless rate peak high in June-August

Hungary's rate of unemployment rose to 7.2% in the June-August period from 7.1% in May-July, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Friday. This is the third period the jobless rate reaches its peak of 7.2% this year. The number of unemployed rose to 302,500 in June-August from 298,700 in the May-July and 246,600 in the same period of 2004. The number of employed was 3,917,000, up from 3,909,200 in the previous three months and 3,904,000 in June-August last year. The employment rate came in at 50.7% in June-August, up from 50.6% in May-July and 50.6% in the corresponding period of 2004. The jobless rate for the 15-24 year old was 19.7%, up from 19.3% in May-July and 16.3% in June-August last year. The KSH said this group represented about 20% of all unemployed. The harmonized rate of unemployment in July, published by the European Union's statistics agency Eurostat, came in at 7.7% in the “old" European Union of 15 states, 6.1% in Hungary and 8.5% in the EU-25.
