House Speaker Katalin Szili held talks with senior Chilean politicians on economic cooperation and transitioning to democracy in Santiago de Chile yesterday. Szili and Acting President Francisco Vidal exchanged views on economic ties, with special regard to opportunities arising from Hungary's EU membership, Péter Sárdi, head of Parliament's foreign affairs office told MTI. Szili and Acting Foreign Minister Christian Barros agreed that the two countries should share experience regarding the transition process to democracy. The house speaker noted that Hungary set up an International Center for Democratic Transition in Budapest to collect this experience and support democratic progress in other countries.
The house speaker laid a wreath on a memorial to 1956 Hungarian freedom fighters and bowed before a memorial plaque remembering the one-time cardinal, József Mindszenty, a staunch opponent of the communist regime.
