A new homeless shelter was opened today at Nyugati railway station, a joint project by national railway company MÁV Rt, the Ministry for Youth, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, and the Budapest Social Methodology Center (BMSzKI), which is the largest organization assisting the homeless in Hungary. The property was a free contribution from MÁV and renovated at a cost of Ft 6.4 million. The shelter offers several services in the daytime, including counselling, lockers, showers, laundromats and a warm place to stay. It can also accommodate 40 homeless at night. It is hoped that the new facility will help solve the street sleeping problem at the railway station and its vicinity.
